From Onions to Pearls

Satyam Nadeen:
excerpt:

Now I know that I'm going way out on a limb by announcing that I've had a wake-up call and that it is definitely available without effort, without spiritual disciplines, and is in the fine tradition of American fast foods - available right now! However, you wouldn't have been drawn to read this book if your head wasn't already in the mouth of the tiger, so there is no escaping your awakening now. Don't start dancing on the ceiling just yet. Keep in mind that while your awakening may be sudden, the ramifications of it, or what I like to call "the deliverance," are not so sudden. In fact, I would venture to say that the deliverance will most likely continue for many, many years to come.

That is why the title From Onions to Pearls was chosen. What we all are is a pure Pearl of Consciousness, God-essence, if you like, without anything possible to be added on for self-realization. But by Divine design, this Pearl, from the moment of birth onward, has been surrounded by layer after layer of conditioning. So what "awakening" consists of is the realization that you are indeed this perfect Pearl of Consciousness; and the the "deliverance" takes over by removing each subtle layer of conditioning until only the Pearl again remains.

Spiritual Disciplines

...<snip>...
There is no magic formula for awakening. If and when it is your time to wake up, it will happen. Nothing can stop it - nothing can help it. There's nothing to do that makes any difference one way or the other. There's not even a necessity to wake up. Source is playing at limitation through each and every one of us. It has an equal, but differently distinct, experience whether it practices 16 hours of zazen meditation a day in a Zen monastery, or is a Hutu soldier in Africa daily slaughtering Tutsis. Each is a perfect expression of Source in manifestation pretending It is limited.

It seems to me that man is interested in seeking out God because deep within his inner knowing is the remembrance that his essence really is pure Consciousness. But he looks out through these myopic eyes and finite intellect, sees himself trapped in a limited body, and panics. He feels his separation from Source and fears that he is trapped forever and will never get back. And so begins his quest to find his way home again. This is as it should be - all included in the Divine design of the dream of limitation.

Pearl Vision knows that there is no need to find your way back to God. You already are that which you are seeking. Nothing needs to be done about awakening. If you are destined for awakening, it will happen on its own in its own good time, not because of you, but in spite of you. It seems like there is a natural progression from being a nonseeker to seeking, and then to finding. It seems to be centered around quiet time and meditation. It seems to involve teachers who pass on their understanding. All of wisdom is contained within the essence of each and every one of us. When we center, or listen to this inner voice in quiet time, then Satsang becomes nonstop, straight from the Source. Relax into the knowing that there is no mysterious formula or magic key to attaining the Godhead. You already are that, so you can't screw it up or lose out. Maybe you will die awakened, and maybe you won't!

It's all the same experience once our bubbles of appearance in the fabric of being pop and we melt back into Source, the dream of separation having ended. And no matter what role we play in this dream of appearance, it is all the same, also. Each life and each separate situation is perfectly balanced with the Freedom/Limitation equation. So it doesn't matter whether you get to play priest or barbarian. Inside of your being, as you are acting the role out, there is equal balance in both. This is why, if you do wake up, you spend the first few months of deliverance laughing your head off at the cosmic joke of it all. You finally get to watch Source perpetrating conventional wisdom as purposeful disinformation to keep Its illusion alive.

In my own experience of living in awareness of who I am - I Am That - almost all former practices have fallen away. Meditation has simply become quiet time when the understanding of this Pearl Vision deepens. I no longer watch my breath, my posture, or my thoughts. Instead I just purr like a contented cat with the Ahhh! experience that life is good! Ahhh! All is well! Nothing to do! Ahhh! Just be! Ahhh! Understanding is all! Ahhh! What is - as is! Everything is as it should be!

Does this sound like hard work? Hardly! No more reading any books - spiritual, scientific, or even stories about the story. Words, whether written or spoken, somehow weigh heavy on the sacredness of the moment. They hurt! No more words are necessary. The rapture of being swept away is more than sufficient, and this rapture is ever-present now.

I find I don't ask for anything anymore. If Source wants to give it, it comes without asking. I also find I can't refuse anyone anymore. If Source wants something, It asks me through the requests of others. Also, owning anything at all feels so unnecessary, even burdensome. Whatever I need mysteriously shows up in abundance. There are no longer any goals or paths to attract or motivate me. Life is good - just as it is. And because I'm not planning for it anymore, it's a wonderful surprise when it suddenly changes and fresh new material shows up.

Workshops and seminars hold no interest as part of the self-help information-gathering process. The same goes for self-help books, tapes, and videos. With the awakening, the journey for knowledge at all levels has gone from insatiable to totally complete. When this happened, I still had about two dozen new books I hadn't read yet. That's not a lot, considering I had read an average of a book a day for the first two years of lockup. But when it was clear to me that any more words just felt ponderous, I gave them away and refused any more new ones.

Remember earlier when I mentioned that before the wake-up call, there was always this free-floating anxiety present that I had to do something terribly important - or else - but I never knew what that was? Now there is the deep peace of knowing that there is nothing to do, whether now or ever! I also mentioned the feeling of imminent doom that was ever present. That was replaced by a constant mantralike assurance from Source that is always floating like a sweet-sounding melody through my head: Consciousness is all there is!

The over-30-year concern about the purity of my diet is now over. What guilt I would feel if I slipped off my self-imposed regime of whatever my food fad was at the moment. Now I know I am not what I eat. The only thing that keeps this bag of skin alive and functioning is Consciousness. Now if Source wants to operate through the freedom of a healthy body, I am motivated to eat healthy foods. And if It wants to feel the limitation of an overweight, artery-clogged, unhealthy body, I'll only yearn for junk food. The preference of the separated ego doesn't have any impact on the final outcome anyway.

So Pearl Vision sees all spiritual practices and disciplines as irrelevant to actually attaining the Godhead. The joke of the matter is, you are already that which you are seeking. If Source wants to have a unique experience of some particular spiritual discipline through you, you will be attracted to that practice regardless. Remember each practice would have its own built-in equation of Freedom/Limitation, so all serves Source equally well in Its quest for limitation. The bottom line once more is just be - do nothing. Understanding is all!

I read this book with much pleasure. It definitely gave me some "brain-food" to work with. I tremendously enjoyed penetrating Nadeen's insights based on his personal journey and to put them in comparison with my own beliefs. ~Angela
